Other
Kilkenny City - Ireland's Medieval Capital
Only 10 minutes drive from Ashbrook House, Kilkenny has played a central role in the history of Ireland. The city is named from the 6th century church founded by St. Canice. Following the Norman Conquest in 1170 churches and monastic foundations were established, while the mediaeval period Kilkenny Castle became the seat of the Butlers, Earls of Ormonde, the most powerful family in Ireland, under whose protection a number of Anglo-Norman families prospered until supplanted by Cromwellian settlers.
Kilkenny is finely situated on both banks of the River Nore. Its narrow winding streets and old buildings add an old-world aspect to a popular modern city.
